| Installing
a Hyper.21
Q:
Can a Hyper.21 engine (8 or 4 port) fit into the Savage
A: Yes, it is a direct replacement
- i.e. you do not need anything else other than the engine.
Q:
What performance benefits does an 8-port Hyper.21 offer over the
stock engine?
A: The 8-port will give better
performance in many (if not all) areas of performance as it is generally
a better engine - you will notice an increase in torque and top-end.
Although the hyper.21 8-port is not going to compare with an RBconcepts
S7 or WS7 or even the competition level OS/Picco engines, it is
widely regarded as an engine with most bang for the buck - excellent
upgrade for the money spent - because it is much more affordable
than other competition level engines.
Installing
a 3-Shoe Clutch
Q:
How can I install a 3-Shoe Clutch in the Savage?
A: You will need the following
parts:
- C0706 Mugen
3-Shoe Flywheel (purple - example here)
- 10010 Ofna
Clutch Shoes 3 pieces (example here)
- 10100 Ofna
Clutch Springs 3 pieces (example here)
You should be
able to use any other shoes or springs meant for .21 sized clutches.
Note that the 10040 OFNA 3-pin flywheel (example here)
will *NOT* fit because it is too thick.
Step 1
Remove the clutchbell, 2-piece clutch shoes, springs, clutch
nut and flywheel from the engine.
TIP: To remove the flywheel without any expensive tools, place the
engine with the crankshaft on a hard surface, then put a long screwdriver
on the back of the flywheel and tap it with a hammer.
Step 2
Install the new 3-shoe mugen wheel and then tighten with the
*ORIGINAL* clutch nut. Some other clutch nuts like the OFNA will
not fit because of the lip on the flywheel. Then install the shoes
and springs. Replace the washer from the original assembly, then
put on the clutchbell, the brass spacer and the washer and then
tighten.
Basically the
entire assembly is identical to stock except for the flywheel, springs
and the shoes. Please refer to the Savage instruction manual if
you are not sure. An online version is available here!
Check to ensure
that the clutchbell spins freely and then you're ready to rumble!
Q:
What performance benefits can I gain from this change?
A: The stock 2-shoe clutch is
fine for most purposes but a 3-shoe setup will increase the contact
surface between the clutch-shoes and the clutchbell. This will increase
the speed at which the shoes will engage the bell and improve the
pick-up response of the truck. A 3-shoe setup should also last longer
than a 2-shoe one.
